Tuakana Teina

Mentorship

We encompass the six principles of the Youth Development Strategy Aotearoa, through the recognition and implementation of two recognised and holistic indigenous health models: Te Whare Tapa Whā and The Circle of Courage.

Mana uses a strengths-based approach to youth development, with mentors building supportive and positive relationships with rangatahi to create Individualised Action Plans in order to achieve their goals. We recognise the paramount importance of acknowledging and incorporating cultural identity and values when working with rangatahi and their whānau. Through the development and implementation of an Individualised Action Plan, the mentor will endeavour to support and motivate rangatahi to improve their overall wellbeing and increase their attendance and engagement with their learning environment.

How does the service work?

The tuakana teina (Mentoring) Service has four key elements:

The matching of a screened and trained mentor with rangatahi.
The establishment of a mutually trusting and respectful relationship.
Supporting rangatahi to develop and implement their mentoring plan.
Recognition and celebration of the achievements and progression of rangatahi.
